Item description:

A CHINESE WHITE JADE OPENWORK ‘LILIES’ PENDANT PLAQUE, JIN DYNASTY (1115 - 1234 AD). “When you have only two pennies left in the world, buy a loaf of bread with one, and a lily with the other” (Chinese Proverb). The circular openwork pendant plaque exceptionally and exquisitely carved with a pair of blossoming Xuan grass lily flowers, each with six petals into three layers of leafs and stems that are opening to the sky, gracefully arranged to compile a perfect composition along with a small phoenix bird showing atop, the stone of milky white even tone throughout with a tiny russet speckling to mounting rim of the reverse. Diameter: 5.45 cm., 2 1/8 in., Thickness: 1.00 cm., 27/64 in., Weight: 31.2 gr. This piece is a masterpiece of Jin dynasty art. This famous Chinese proverb aptly defines the beauty of lilies in just one sentence. The lily flower is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful flowers in the world. In China people carry white lilies to attract luck and protect themselves from malicious spirits or the evil eye, but also as a symbol of summer and abundance, and some believe it represents "forever in love." Chinese healers use lilies similarly to aroma therapists to lift a person's spirits and stabilize emotion. Feng Shui practitioners use fresh or growing white lilies in areas of the home dedicated to money and relationships. In this system the flowers represent prosperity and eternal love. When a pregnant mother wears a lily, she expresses her wishes to bear a son. A virtually identical plaque is exhibited at the Treasures of The Canadian Foundation for Chinese Heritage Preservation Museum. The resemblance is so strikingly close that most likely both plaques have been executed by the same master carver. Another similar, but not as attractive pale celadon and russet jade openwork oval plaque from the Yuan/Ming dynasty (1260-1644) has recently (Sotheby’s, November 2013, Sale 9598, Lot #1233A) fetched over $60,000, but other similar examples have realized even higher results. The present important piece is of extreme rarity and exceptional quality. Along with other gifts, the present piece was presented by Chinese government officials immediately after the end of WWII to a US war journalist for his exceptional help and support to the Chinese people during the war.
