Joseph's Coat brought to Jacob (B., Holl. 38; H. 104) etching, 1633, a strong, richly printed impression of the first state (of two) with nearly no margins. 106 x 82 mm. Nice and rare REMBRANDT Harmensz. van Rijn Dutch 1606–69 genuine and authentic etching of JOSEPH'S COAT BROUGHT TO JACOB (Bartsch 38). 1st state of the gravure. Signed at bottom Rembrandt van Ryn f. Printed on laid paper with several columns of watermark stripes (see images). Overall very good condition for this piece and work of art of this most famous artist - there are some faint signs of sheet being lightly creased in the past at two places, which are visible only at the reverse of the sheet. Otherwise the piece appears totally intact and currently it is completely flat and straighted up. Tiny remains of glueing and mounting marks at reverse, but these can easily be removed by any restoration worker. We have also provided certain comparisons between the prsent 1st state of the etching and a 2nd state print that had been sold through a major auction several years ago. One can further see another comparison between the present etching and a virtually identically detailed 1st state that is currently displayed in the British Museum. The story behind the picture: Joseph was seized by his brothers and sold to some merchants as a slave. They then dipped his coat in the blood of a kid, and brought it to their father, telling him that they had found it that way in the desert. Jacob could only conclude that Joseph had been devoured by wild beasts. He fell into an inconsolable depression (Genesis 37:31-34). By no means a perfect gem masterpiece and original work of art depicting this fascinating Biblical and religious / religion theme. The last similar piece was offered in December 2006 at Sotheby's - London for an estimate in the $15,000-$23,000 (Sale #7365, Lot #160). The present work comes unframed. Scarce art collector piece and one of the nice and rare Rembrandt etchings, paintings and works of art in general.
